From Our Photospondents
It's that time of year — kids are anticipating the holidays. In the northern hemisphere, we will soon turn the corner of the winter solstice and the days will get longer. Notice the happiness of this mother and her son, and the way the blurry colored lights in the background reinforce the mood (see the Sharp or Fuzzy TipsFlick and Actual Info for more about depth of field).

WAKE UP!
Sure, bears hibernate during the winter, but just because it's cold and perhaps snowy (in the northern hemisphere) doesn't mean you should stay inside. Get out there and show us what the season is all about. Or stay in and show us images of snuggly warm. Remember if you are shooting a scene with a lot of snow (or a lot of fire), the in-camera meter can easily be fooled by all that bright! Be careful metering.
NEW!! Photo Assignments
Bob & Cary love looking at photos, and we want to see yours! In PixBoomBAssignments, we will give you a subject—the rest is up to you. Cary & Bob will review the submissions and will post the images in special Galleries. Ones that strike us will be critiqued in PixBoomBlog, and the very best will be posted on the home page. Assignments now include Shooting Strangers, Depth of Field, and Motion. Get out there and get cracking. To find out more about the Assignments, click on the tab at top right of this page. To join in, roll over Assignments and click on Shooting Strangers, Depth of Field, or Motion in the pop-down menu.
