Welcome to PixBoomBa!!

Bob Caputo and Cary Wolinsky have been making photographs for a really long time. As decades-long veterans of National Geographic, there’s not much of the globe they haven’t covered by plane, train, boat, car, motorcycle, bicycle, horse, yak, donkey cart, foot, hands and knees, or just about any other means of moving you can think of. They’ve photographed from the air and under the seas, in deserts, swamps, plains, mountains, caves, and occasionally in towns and cities where there are nice comfortable hotels to stay in. They’ve photographed people from presidents and movie stars to villagers in remote parts of China and deep in the Amazonian rain forest. Their subjects have ranged from landscapes, wildlife, and high fashion to famines, genocide, AIDS, and wars. They’ve been arrested, had guns pointed at them, and had to duck as bullets flew around towns being blown apart. And they’ve been welcomed into homes all over the world and given sustenance by people who sometimes did not have enough food to feed their own families.

Along the way, they learned a thing or two about making photographs.

This website is a collaboration of Cary and Bob with filmmaker Yari Wolinsky. (Full disclosure: Yari is some relation to Cary.) Together, we have tried to make both the technical and aesthetic elements of good photography understandable and accessible to anyone who is interested in making better images, no matter what their skill level. We believe that if we can make pretty decent pictures, anyone can.

Each Tips Flix video is about some aspect of photography. Some are pretty straightforward; in others, the information is presented in umm… I guess you would say a more roundabout fashion. Attached to each Tips Flix is an Actual Info page that describes the topic covered in the video in more detail and is illustrated with photos. Use it as you would a photography field guide. PixBoomBlog is about practically anything and everything having to do with making pictures (and lots of other stuff as well). We will have guest bloggers, answer questions, and show the winners of our PixBoomBa Contests. For the contests, we will come up with an assignment or topic and, just like the real world, a deadline. Everyone is invited to send in an image (one per customer, please). Cary and Bob will review the submissions and choose the winners, whose names and pictures will be displayed in the blog. We will have several contests a year. New Tips Flix videos and Actual Info pages will be posted every two weeks. Both will then be archived and can be found by searching for topics or categories. New PixBoomBlogs will be posted weekly.
